It's hard to believe that for freshmen, the first year at Lab is coming to an end in only two-and-a-half months. Since September, I have seen the entire grade transform. Many people have seemed to really find their place in this community, forming close friendships, being a part of clubs, joining sports teams, building stronger relationships with teachers and administration, and evolving into stronger collaborators. These are just a few of the ways that 9th graders at Lab have grown these past few months.
Recently, 8th graders received their high school results back. Only a year ago, we freshmen were in the exact same position they are in right now. High school can seem intimidating and scary. I thought that a few freshmen could share their experiences for the incoming freshman class as they transition from middle school to high school. Students can offer some key advice they learned from their own experiences. These simple changes or additions to their routine helped them greatly as they adjusted to the Lab community, and their new lifestyle as high schoolers.
Hawke Begun: “My advice for all incoming freshmen is to try to be on time for their first period class every morning. It’ll help build a good habit that you can harbor for the next 4 years of high school, and the rest of your life.”
Stella Vosko: “If you’re an incoming freshman, one of the most important things is staying organized throughout the year, whether it’s managing your time, schoolwork, or keeping your locker/bag clean. Do your best to make conversation with others. Everyone is on the same boat as you, they want to meet new people and make friends.”
Holden Ellenberg: “I would tell incoming freshmen to branch out—join clubs, and find balance between academics and your social life. Lab offers many ways to further explore different interests, as well build new friendships. Take advantage of those opportunities.”
Jacky Li: “My advice for current 8th graders coming to Lab next year is to manage your homework around your schedule, especially if you have time-consuming extracurriculars after school, like sports.”
